“Lap times achieved in standard production car with no mechanical modifications.”
Honda is describing its Civic Type-R hot hatch as a “race car for the road” and it now has all the facts to prove that. On paper, with its 2.0-liter turbo and advanced chassis technologies, the car is really fast, but now it has managed to set new records on five European race tracks, taking the role of arguably the fastest FWD production car on the planet nowadays.
The car was already the king of the famous Nurburgring track in Germany and that inspired Honda to visit five legendary circuits on the Old continent and set a new record for a FWD car. It all started back in April, when on a rainy day at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, the Civic Type-R set a time of 2 minutes 44.45 seconds. Later in the same month, when the weather was good, the team returned and lapped the track in 2:31.85 minutes.
Then came the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, where Honda Racing driver Rob Huff recorded a time of 2:56.91 minutes. Italy’s historic Monza circuit was the next target and Norbert Michelisz was responsible for a new record with 2:15.16 minutes.
Before heading to Hungary for the last attempt, the Honda team visited the Autódromo do Estoril in Portugal for a 2:04.08-minute lap with Bruno Correia behind the wheel. Finally, the team arrived at the Hungaroring on June 6 for the great end of the challenge, managing to record a 2:10.85-minute time.
As a final note, Honda explains all lap times were achieved with standard production car with no mechanical modifications.
