ZA PetroSexual: BorgWarner

“As different components are used to assemble and produce vehicles, BorgWarner is that one big component contributor in the automotive industry.”

It’s a timeline starting from the 18th century, 1880 to be exact. Morse Equalizing Spring Company was the forerunner at the time with the company developing different mechanical systems for transmissions emission regulator systems to carburetors.

1928 was the big year. Borg Werner corporation is formed by four founding companies namely; Borg & Beck, Marvel Schebler, Warner Gear and Mechanics Universal Joint. From its founding years, the company has manufactured clutches, transfer cases for four-wheel drive cars, glow plugs for cold diesel engines and in 1950 the three-speed automatic transmission gearbox termed the “Ford-O-Matic” was produced followed by the turbocharger in 1952.

Schwitzer, a forerunner of BorgWarner Turbo Systems, introduced its turbocharger at the Indianapolis 500. In 1956 a high performance 4-speed gearbox is introduced and called the T10 which was used by the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1960 the Thermal Division developed a fan drive for Buick which was used to cool the engine. The innovative design quickly captured the market in the commercial vehicle segment. During these years Borg Warner was a pioneer in transmission systems, introducing the Model 35 automatic transmission in 1961 and in 1974 it brought in a more advanced Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) gearbox, followed by 5-speed manual ‘box built for cars and trucks in 1980.

Fast forward to present times and BorgWarner has contributed largely in the automotive industry with its turbo, transmission and gas emission regulator systems. Some of its renowned projects, to name a few are; the Lexus V8 engine carbon-impregnated components and PACE award winning dual-tronic transmission (DSG) which debuted in the Audi TT and VW Golf R32. Their epitome of clutch and transmission was also chosen by Nissan to use in R35 GTR.

In 2015, Borg Warner supplied Ford with engine timing technology that powered the 2015 Ford Mustang GT and the tough and capable F-150. It didn’t end there though, and the company produces the l4 engine for Jaguar Land Rover which was based on configurable and flexible architecture that ensured reduced emissions and improved fuel economy. In 2015 Borg Warner was honoured by EMEA supplier award for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

As an innovative company, Borg Warner also extended their relationship with Swede vehicle manufacturer Volvo by supplying the GenV electro-hydraulically actuated all-wheel drive system on its XC90 new offering.

Just like Jacobus Spijker, Ettore Buggati, Horacio Pagani and Christian von koenigsegg; Borg Werner is a shape-shifting company that took risks and looked way ahead into the future of automotive technologies and with their turbo and EGR technologies, we now have quicker, more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient cars.
